Thought Bubble - Work in Progress

April 2024

Thought Bubble aims to make evident how intelligence can operate in different scales of time and space, and with different competency scopes. It also showcases how the more-than-human world copes with changing environment conditions, not always being negatively affected.

Intelligence

The project follows William James’ definition of intelligence: 'a fixed goal with variable means of achieving it.' It presents the cyanobacteria process of optimizing growth for changing environment conditions and attempts to showcase this process in novel ways.

Artificial Chimaeras

Thought Bubble is not only about the scales and the definitions of intelligence, it is also an exploration on how we can craft software-hardware-wetware hybrids that help us make better sense of the world around us. As Paola Antonelli states in her foreword to BIODESIGN by William Myers, “In Designers’ ability to build scenarios and prototypes of behavior lies a power that they should protect and cherish, and that will become even more important in the future”. It is in this spirit that I’ve applied product design methodologies to the purpose of building a speculative object which does not aim to solve users problems but rather widen audiences perspectives.

Future Steps

The key aspect of working with living systems for me is that in their behaviour, which we can read as mere chemical reaction, lies their agency. And it is a subtle implication present in the work (and another direction I’d like to keep exploring) that AI might be used to interpret, understand or augment the agency of the more-than-human world. This points to a future in which we might engage in a different way with nature, as Neri Oxman states, “rethinking design to empower a future of complete synergy between Nature and humanity.”
